The 3rd Annual Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas Conference is designed to provide information on how managers can better finance, build and maximize thier AD/biogas projects. To that end, various industry leaders will be on hand to present their views on AD & biogas opportunities (and potential roadblocks) in the United States.

Speakers include: Harrison Clay, president, Clean Energy Renewable Fuels; Robert Joblin, Cenergy; and Julia Levin, executive director, Bioenergy Association of California. The presenters are expected to provide their respective takes on a number of important issues affecting the industry, including incentives for the industry and the emerging role of renewable natural gas (Bio CNG). 

"It seems like almost every company with significant involvement in the production or management of large organic waste streams is building or researching AD as a solution," said Clean Energy Renewable Fuels' Harrison Clay. Julia Levin, of the Bioenergy Association of California, concurs. "This market is only going to grow, and the state of California wants it to grow." 

Forecasts indicate the AD/biogas market could reach $25 billion by 2020, with growth coming mainly from the US and Asia. What's more, environmental policies from individual states and countries are increasingly favourable to biogas as well as the clean disposal of organic waste. The overriding feeling is that anaerobic digestion can be a real success -- providing there is proper government support and a more conciliatory approach across the industry, observers say.

At the same time, significant challenges remain. For example: utility companies are hesitant; start-up finance is difficult to secure; and proving that technologies can work at scale can be tough.
