3TIER selects Kompact Grid as partner in Romania

New relationship brings advanced wind and solar forecasting capabilities to the country.

3TIER®, a global leader in renewable energy assessment and forecasting, has secured a partnership with Bucharest, Romania-based Kompact Grid. A subsidiary of EolianExpert and Midas Group, Kompact Grid will serve as 3TIER’s exclusive authorized reseller within Romania.

With an estimated 14,000 MW of wind energy potential and an average of 210 sunny days per year, Romania has excellent renewable resources and is one of the best locations for new wind development within Europe. While these resources have largely remained untapped, that is all starting to change. With only 14 MW of installed wind capacity in 2009, the country now has over 2,000 MW. Solar installations have also grown from less than 5 MW in 2011 to a pipeline of projects totaling over 400 MW.

“With so much wind and solar energy coming online in such a short time period, the energy system has had to adapt very rapidly,” Luis Nuche, EMEA Account Manager at 3TIER, explained. “The new government forecasting requirements will improve system management, but also make operators accountable for deviations with imbalance penalty fees. 3TIER is uniquely positioned to fill this gap, having helped clients mitigate this risk for many years within the competitive US wind market as well as several other markets around the world.”
 

Kompact Grid has worked on some of the largest power plants in Romania, connecting more than 300 MW of wind and solar energy to the grid. Kompact Grid and its parent company, EolianExpert, have been key partners for the developers driving the exponential growth of renewable energy in Romania. Over the last four years, EolianExpert has provided engineering services for measurement campaigns, project design, and wind analysis on over 20 wind projects totaling more than 1,000 MW.
