US saw good wind in Q2 2011, Europe less so

The US had an exceptionally good quarter with above normal wind speeds in the second quarter (Q2) this year, according to AWS Truepower LLC.

By Kari Williamson

“It was windier than normal across almost the entire country, and especially in the souther Great Plains, where a large fraction of the country's wind power plants are operating,” says Michael Brower, CTO at AWS.

“The last 12 months were also good for wind power production.”

Europe, however, saw less wind: “In southern and eastern Europe, wind speeds were slightly below normal during the second quarter,” adds Joan Aymami, Vice President of International Business at AWS.

“Conversely, wind speeds were 5-15% above normal in [the] United Kingdom, Iceland, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Austria.”
