The energy produced from the 3 MW Solar plant in Mulshi will be purchased by Tata Power and distributed in Mumbai to meet an RPO defined by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). Tata BP Solar - a joint venture between TATA and BP Solar UK - is the technology provider for the project.

Tata Power has an aggressive plan of generating 25,000 MW of energy by 2017, and says it intends to have a 20%-25% contribution from "clean power sources" - which will include a mix of Hydro, Solar, Wind, Geothermal and Waste Gas generation.

Apart from the 3 MW solar plant at Mulshi, the Company, through its subsidiary, is implementing a 25MW solar power project in Mithapur, Gujarat, for which it has already signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL), under the Gujarat State’s Solar Power Policy 2009. The Gujarat solar project is targeting Commercial Operation in December 2011.

Tata Power’s subsidiary, NDPL, has also commissioned a 1 MW grid connected roof top solar plant in Delhi.
