LDK Solar invests US$40m in sapphire solar wafer capabilities

LDK Solar Co Ltd has invested approximately US$40 million in a new sapphire solar wafer manufacturing plant in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province.

The facility will have capacity to supply two million two-inch equivalent pieces of sapphire solar wafers annually.

Xiaofeng Peng, Chairman and CEO of LDK Solar, says: "We believe this new investment in manufacturing sapphire wafers has a great synergy with LDK Solar's crystallisation and wafer engineering and manufacturing expertise, and will enhance LDK Solar's product offerings.

"We also would like to express our sincere appreciation to Nanchang City and Jiangxi Province for the support they have shown us during the planning and construction of our wafer and module plants over the past two years."

Curios...?? Is Sapphire, the gem, actually being used in the production of solar cells? (I am a newbie to this field of research) Any explanation would be appreciated...
