Atlantis 1 MW tidal turbine to EMEC

Atlantis Resources Corporation’s 1 MW tidal power turbine, the AK1000™, is due for installation at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), located in Orkney, Scotland, this summer.

The tidal power device is rated at 1 MW at a water velocity of 2.65m/s. It has an 18 m rotor diameter, weighs 130 tonnes and is 22.5 m tall.

The tidal turbine has a low rotation speed whilst in operation, making it less intrusive on the environment.

The AK1000 nacelle was fabricated by Soil Marine Dynamics in Newcastle in England and the gravity base structure and system assembly was completed by Isleburn Engineering, a member of the Aberdeen based Global Energy Group. Steel for the tidal turbine came from Corus’ Scunthorpe facility.
