Wind turbine hit by "UFO"?

A wind-turbine at the Ecotricity Fen Farm wind park in Lincolnshire, UK, has been destroyed, with one blade being knocked off and the other disfigured.

Such is the mystery surrounding the destruction that the British media has jumped on the story, with reports of "mysterious lights" in the sky over Lincolnshire before the incident with the wind turbine early on Sunday 4 January.

British daily The Sun quotes a witness describing a “massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground.”

Ecotricity calls the incident “unique” and says they are investigating what could have happened. Dale Vince, Founder of Ecotricty told the BBC, “to make one of these blades fall off, or to bend it, takes a lot.” Vince added that his company is not ruling out any possibilities.

Some media added fuel to the UFO theories by claiming the missing wind turbine blade was no-where to be found, but this was refuted by an Ecotricity spokesperson saying to the Independent that the missing blade was found on the ground beneath the turbine.

Madeline Carroll, PR Officer at Ecotricity told Renewable Energy Focus on Thursday: "Our engineers and Enercon's are carrying out a thorough investigation. We don’t as yet have any evidence that points us to a cause. There is nothing obvious in what we’ve found so far, no tell tale signatures of, for example, lightning strike or collision.

"We've examined the turbine, the fallen blade and the surrounding area, looking for clues. We also sent parts of the fallen blade away for more forensic testing.

"We have been liaising with the Health & Safety Executive and the local council. Both are satisfied that this is a unique and isolated incident. We, and they, have no concerns with the ongoing safety of this, or any of our other wind parks."

Fen Farm wind farm features 20 Enercon turbines, each 800 kW - 16 MW in total.
