Turkana plans 300 MW windfarm in Kenya

A 300 MW windfarm is being planned in Kenya by Turkana Wind Power Consortium (LTWP).

The windfarm will consist of 353 Vestas V52 850 kW wind turbines, and the initial phase is scheduled to start production in July 2010 with full power estimated for June 2011.

Around 400 km of transmission lines would be needed to connect the windfarm to the Kenyan national grid, the consortium says.

Project partners are:

  • Mammoet Europe B.V., heavy lifting and extreme transport firm (the Netherlands);
  • Schicon bvba, energy research and consultancy services company (Belgium);
  • Vestas Benelux B.V., subsidiary of Vestas;
  • Deutsche Windenergie Institut (DEWI), wind measurement institute (Germany);
  • KPMG, financial management and auditing firm;
  • Anjarwalla & Khanna, corporate law firm (Kenya).
