alpha ventus offshore wind farm formally commissioned

Germany’s first offshore wind farm, alpha ventus, has been formally commissioned 45 km off the coast of Borkum island in the North Sea.

alpha ventus was constructed by a consortium of EWE, E.ON and Vattenfall Europe, and represents an investment of €250 million.

alpha ventus consists of 12, 5 MW offshore wind turbines: 6 Areva Multibrid M5000 offshore wind turbines and 6 REpower 5M turbines.

In addition, two types of steel foundations were used to support the wind power turbines, which stand at depths of 30 m. The Areva Multibrid offshore wind turbines stand on tripods, and the REpower offshore wind turbines stand on jacket foundations.

German Federal Environment Minister Dr. Norbert Röttgen says: "The use of wind power will play a key role in the energy mix of the future. Offshore wind farms are a decisive factor in this role. Our goal is an installed offshore capacity of 25,000 MW by the year 2030.”

The operation of alpha ventus can also be followed via the internet through a webcam.
