Acciona constructs 50 MW concentrating solar power plant

Acciona has started work on its third concentrating solar power (CSP) plant in Spain, a 50 MW facility in Majadas de Tiétar, Cáceres province.

The concentrating solar power plant represents an investment of €237 million and will enter service in the second half of 2010.

The Majadas facility, like the others developed by Acciona in Spain, is based on solar trough collector technology. The CSP plant will have a solar field of 135 hectares. 800 solar collectors will be installed on the site, covering a total of 48 linear miles, equipped with a total of 192,000 mirrors.

It is the third concentrating solar power plant built by Acciona in Spain, after the 50 MW Alvarado I, which will enter service this summer, and the 50 MW Palma del Rio II, which will be completed by the spring of 2010.

In June 2009 Acciona expects to start construction work on its fourth Spanish CSP plant, Palma del Río I. This solar facility will also have a capacity of 50 MW and is planned to enter into service at the end of 2010. Administrative procedures are ongoing for a fifth 50 MW CSP plant, Alvarado II, which will be built after the others.

Acciona’s overall objective is to have 200 MW of solar thermal power capacity installed in Spain by the end of 2010. The national Renewables Plan for Spain calls for 500 MW by 2010.
