Wide-ranging plenaries lined up for Fuel Cells 2014 Science & Technology Conference

The programme for the Fuel Cells 2014 Science & Technology Conference includes a number of plenary presentations on key topics in fuel cell research and development. The conference is taking place 3–4 April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The Fuel Cells 2014 Science & Technology ConferenceA Grove Fuel Cell Event will take place 3–4 April at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel in central Amsterdam. This biennial, research-oriented conference series is organised by Elsevier in collaboration with the Grove Steering Committee.

The conference will comprise a mix of plenary speakers and parallel technical sessions on a variety of key technology and research topics, as well as an extensive poster programme.

The conference opens on Thursday 3 April with a plenary presentation by Bert De Colvenaer, Executive Director of the European Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), who will speak about the past, present and future of the FCH JU. He will then present the 2014 Grove Medal to Professor David Wilkinson of the University of British Columbia in Canada, whose Grove Medal Address will discuss the renaissance to commercialisation of the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC).

After the refreshment break, Dr Mascha Smit, Team Leader R&D at Nedstack in the Netherlands, will talk about research interests for PEM fuel cells from the perspective of a commercial stack manufacturer. Niels Christiansen, Chief Innovation Officer at Topsoe Fuel Cell in Denmark, will then highlight the challenges in solid oxide fuel cell development, from science to technology and industrialisation. And Dr Balsu Lakshmanan, Lab Group Manager at General Motors in the US, will talk about GM’s work on fuel cell cathode performance and degradation at low platinum loadings.

The parallel technical sessions on Thursday cover PEMFC at cell/component level, and SOFC at cell/component level. Poster viewing will run through the day, with poster presentations in the late afternoon.

On Friday 4 April the conference reconvenes with a plenary talk by Dr Nancy L. Garland, Technology Development Manager for the US Department of Energy, who will give an update on the DOE’s hydrogen and fuel cell programme.

The parallel technical sessions on Friday will cover PEMFC electrocatalysis, novel fuels and electrolytes, modelling & control, and systems & applications.

The conference is wrapped up with the Award of Poster Prizes, and presentation of the Conclusions from the Symposium.
