PV modules for rocket demonstration

Semprius Inc has supplied its high concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) solar module technology to support of a 17.5 kilowatt DC demonstration system at the Solar Technology Acceleration Center (SolarTAC) in Colorado.

The system is manufactured by Aerojet Rocketdyne, a supplier of propulsion and energetics to the space, missile defense, strategic, tactical missile and armaments areas.

Semprius says that its modules can reach 35.5 per cent efficiency – two to three times more efficient than conventional photovoltaic modules.

The SolarTAC demonstration system includes Semprius HCPV modules, a standard solar inverter and a dual-axis tracker system. Connected to the grid in August 2013, the demonstration system is already operating at peak AC system efficiencies exceeding 30 per cent.

The demonstration is being overseen by the Electric Power Research Institute Inc, a non-profit organization that conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public.

"We are very excited to be working with Aerojet Rocketdyne," said Russell Kanjorski, vice president of business development at Semprius. "With systems installed in eight countries and four US states since 2010, we look forward to this opportunity to demonstrate the superior performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness of our technology."

Semprius will supply modules and technical assistance to Aerojet Rocketdyne under its award from the US Department of Defense for a 200 KW commercial demonstration at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
