Aquion & Siemens agreement to develop grid energy storage

Aquion Energy Inc , a developer of energy storage systems, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens to test the integration of Aquion’s aqueous hybrid ion (AHI) batteries and Siemens’ Sinamics S120 drive technology.

As part of the agreement, Siemens has purchased an initial set of Aquion batteries for shipment to its manufacturing and test facility.

Siemens’ Sinamics S120 inverter solution and Aquion’s AE12 battery module product are currently under high voltage test at Aquion’s R&D facility in Pittsburgh, and will undergo additional joint testing at Siemens’ facility in Alpharetta, Georgia. Based on Aquion’s breakthrough AHI battery technology, the AE12 battery module is an 18 kilowatt hour system that provides long-duration daily cycling for microgrid and grid applications.

“With its novel Aqueous Hybrid Ion technology, Aquion has emerged with an exciting new energy storage solution,” said Dr Razvan Panati, director of new technologies at Siemens Industry. “We want to explore the Aqueous Hybrid Ion technology proposed by Aquion, validate its capabilities and potential for offering cost effective grid-scale deployments and energy efficient Microgrid and Renewables support functions.

“Our intention is to support the Aquion team in developing fully integrated AHI-based energy storage systems using our scalable, industry proven, off-the-shelf inverter technology.”

“Our work with Siemens is a key step in the validation of our technology at commercial scale as we significantly ramp our production capacity,” said Scott Pearson, CEO of Aquion. “We look forward to showing that AHI batteries can be integrated with Siemens inverters to deliver cutting-edge storage solutions that are reliable, safe, cost-effective and environmentally benign to customers on a global scale.”
