Volkswagen transporters rely on SFC fuel cells

German-based SFC Smart Fuel Cell, a major supplier of fuel cell products for mobile and off-grid power applications, has received a purchase order from automotive giant Volkswagen for more than 200 fuel cell systems. The contract, which is to be fulfilled during 2009, is worth around €630,000.

Volkswagen says that it will use the EFOY 1600-type fuel cells ex works for powering electrical devices on board VW transporter vehicles that are used by various authorities. The VW transporters are employed as mobile offices, for example, and require a reliable supply of electricity.

Providing auxiliary power to such special utility vehicles used to be a major challenge, says SFC Smart Fuel Cell. As these vehicles are used at different locations, they are typically not able to gain access to the public grid. Furthermore, conventional generators are noisy and pollute the atmosphere.

Using the SFC fuel cell system on board the transporter solves this problem in an environmentally friendly way by automatically and silently recharging the batteries, whenever this is needed, while producing practically no emissions. This increases functionality and operational flexibility of the vehicles.
