Hawaii PUC approves contract for 5 MW solar farm in Kalaeloa

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved a contract between SunPower Corp and Hawaiian Electric Company for the output of a 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) farm planned for Kalaeloa in West Oahu, Hawaii.

SunPower will design, build and operate the solar PV farm and subject to receipt of applicable permits, SunPower plans to begin construction this year and complete the solar farm within five months.

SunPower says the cost per kilowatt hour will start under US$0.20/kWh and will initially escalate at a fixed rate before a price reduction during the second half of the contract.

The SunPower agreement is the first utility-scale solar PV project on Oahu approved by the PUC.
