Japan one step closer to renewable energy bill

Japan's lower house of parliament has passed a bill to subsidise renewable energy generation.

The bill which is now in Japan's upper house requires utilities to buy electricity from renewable sources such a geothermal, solar and wind at a higher price to stimulate investment in renewable energy.

Renewable energy currently accounts for 9% of Japan's power supply, according to Bloomberg.
