Approved: Offshore wind farm for Sweden

The Environmental court has given wpd, a Stockholm-based wind power operator, the green light to begin construction of a large-scale offshore wind farm on Storgrundet, Sweden.

The offshore wind farm will generate up to 265 MW of electricity on 53 wind turbines.

wpd Project Manager Hans Ohlsson says: “The Storgrundet site has shallow water, good soil conditions and location close to the shore and these are important elements for an offshore wind project.”

The Storgrundet offshore wind farm is expected to begin generating electricity within two years.

The Storgrundet offshore wind farm site is covered by Söderhamns Municipality's master plan and is identified as national interest for wind use.

To date the wpd Group has deployed around 1600 wind turbines with a total power of 2 GW and is planning for an additional 7 GW worldwide. In Sweden, wpd is currently in the design and development stage of two large offshore wind farms at Finngrunden and Storgrundet.
