GE broadens waste-to-energy capabilities

GE is acquiring Calnetix Power Solutions (CPS), which manufactures technology to generate electricity using the waste heat from industrial processes, in order to add to its biogas equipment unit.

Florida-based CPS will be integrated into GE’s Jenbacher gas engine business, located in Jenbach, Austria.  According to Steve Bolze, President and CEO of GE Power & Water, this investment will tap into a “US$1 billion global space with high growth opportunities.”

The electricity generated from capturing the waste heat of various types of engines, biomass boilers and gas turbines will add to GE’s existing gas engine output which currently ranges from 0.25 to 4.4 MW.

Today, much of the activity in the small-scale, waste heat recovery sector is centred in Europe.
