Electric vehicles make most sense if their batteries are charged using electricity from renewable energy sources – but the supply of ‘green’ electricity is not always adequate. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Germany have now developed an intelligent charging station, which can adapt recharging times to suit energy supply and network capacity.

The French solid state hydrogen storage developer McPhy Energy has signed a research contract with CEA Liten, a leading European research center for new energy technologies. McPhy Energy has now delivered the first magnesium hydride storage tank to CEA Liten in Grenoble.

US-based Nuvera Fuel Cells has received two technical research awards from the Department of Energy, to increase the durability and performance of PEM fuel cell stacks designed to meet DOE’s 2015 cost and durability targets. The DOE targets for automotive fuel cell stack cost and durability are US$15/kWe and 5000 hours, respectively.

Australian-based Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd has sold its first BlueGen micro combined heat and power (mCHP) unit in the UK. Ideal Boilers will test and demonstrate the BlueGen gas-to-electricity solid oxide fuel cell unit at its product development and manufacturing facility in Hull.
